“Aims To evaluate the effect of Tolterodine on urethral and bladder afferent nerves in women with detrusor overactivity (DO) in comparison to placebo, by studying the changes in the current perception threshold (CPT). Methods: Women with overactive bladder symptoms and idiopathic DO were recruited and randomized in a double-blind manner between placebo and tolterodine extended release. All women underwent CPT testing of the bladder and urethra using a Neurometer constant current stimulator. CPT values were determined at three frequencies, including 2,000 Hz (corresponding to Ab-fibers), 250 Hz (corresponding to Ad-fibers), and 5 Hz (corresponding to C fibers) before and 7 days on treatment. CPT values before and on treatment were compared using a Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. Results: Twenty women (mean age 46 years) were studied. There was no statistical difference between the two groups in terms of age, ethnicity, severity of symptoms and pre-treatment CPT values. Only in the tolterodine group there was a significantly increased CPT value at 5 and 250 Hz upon both urethral and bladder stimulation after 1 week of treatment.

“Klebsiella pneumoniae is a well-known opportunistic pathogen, often causing catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Biofilm formation on the catheter surfaces is an important step in the development

of these infections. To identify the genes involved in the ability of K. pneumoniae to form a biofilm on abiotic surfaces, a novel strategy was used. A clone library was constructed by cloning the entire K. pneumoniae genome of the clinical isolate C3091 into a fosmid vector and the clone library was expressed in Escherichia coli. A total of 1152 clones were screened for enhanced biofilm formation compared with the E. coli parent strain using a biofilm microtiter plate assay. Nine clones with significantly enhanced biofilm formation were identified, subjected to random Tn5 transposon mutagenesis, screened for biofilm deficiency and the biofilm-promoting genes identified. Five of the clones contained the type 3 fimbriae gene cluster, a well-known K. pneumoniae virulence factor and biofilm promoter. Thus, the effectiveness of our approach was confirmed. ANalysis of GastroEsophageal reflux disease [GERD]) study assessed differences among patients consulting a primary care physician due to GERD-related reasons in terms of: symptoms, diagnosis and management, response to treatment, and effects on productivity, costs and health-related quality of life. This subanalysis of RANGE determined the impact of GERD on productivity in work and daily life.

Methods: RANGE was conducted at 134 primary care sites

across six European countries (Germany, Greece, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK). fragment of Y chromosome, used for sex diagnosis, and a PrnP fragment. PrnP codons 134 and 156, and codon 171 were genotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphisms and allele-specific PCR, respectively, after re-amplification of PrnP fragment. The specificity of the method was first assessed by testing 359 blood samples from Rasa Aragonesa sheep breed (161 males and 198 females). No amplification failures and total agreement between genotypic and phenotypic sex were found. In the same way, PrnP genotype determination by duplex PCR assay was in agreement with the PrnP animal’s genotype established by sequencing. Finally, 73 samples of 1-10 cells from compact morulae were aspirated through the zona pellucida and genotyped for sex and PrnP. The efficiency was 96% when three or more cells were sampled.
